Arial is a sans-serif typeface in the neo-grotesque style, designed in 1982 by Robin Nicholas and Patricia Saunders at Monotype Typography. Originally created for use in an early IBM laser printer, the typeface rose to prominence after Microsoft licensed it as one of the four core TrueType fonts for Windows 3.1 in 1992.
