By the mid-2000s, the musical landscape of suburban America was primed for a change. Fall Out Boy, four friends from the Chicago suburbs, were in a precarious position. Their 2003 indie debut, Take This to Your Grave *, had made them popular within the punk and hardcore scenes, but the mainstream remained out of reach. When they relocated to Los Angeles to record their major-label debut for Island Records, the pressure was immense. After being initially rejected by producer Neal Avron, who felt the early demos were weak, the band returned with new material that would change everything.
