The self-titled debut album is a dark, aggressive, and raw introduction to the band. Released originally on vinyl via Nemesis Records, it features a much heavier, post-punk, and gothic-tinged sound than their later melodic hits.
Before filling stadiums, The Offspring—formed by vocalist/guitarist Dexter Holland and bassist Greg K.—were a staple of the gritty SoCal punk scene. Their early sound was heavily influenced by local hardcore legends like T.S.O.L., Agent Orange, and Social Distortion. The Offspring (1989)
Continuing the sound established on Americana , this album leaned further into pop-punk and "nu-metal" aesthetics of the era. It was originally intended to be released directly online, a revolutionary concept at the time, but label pressure resulted in a standard retail release.
