Help Your Students' Vocabulary Grow

Science teachers are BUSY, and one challenging task in science is determining which key words to teach. Enter: The Holiday Science Scavenger Hunt.
It's basically "find science in the wild" but make it festive. Students hunt for real-world examples at home, in the classroom, or around their neighborhood—then connect what they find back to actual science concepts.

Why it's a December lifesaver:
✅ Gets them moving (crucial when they're bouncing off the walls)
✅ Works in-person, hybrid, OR remote
✅ Zero prep for you (just print or assign digitally)
✅ Perfect for early finishers, sub days, or those "we have 20 minutes left" moments

Bonus: They actually enjoy it because it doesn't feel like a worksheet. It feels like a challenge.

Let's keep it real: Not everyone celebrates the same way—and that's what makes December so interesting. 🌟

So instead of defaulting to "Christmas everything," why not use this season as a chance to actually learn from each other?

Here's the shift: Move from "holiday party" energy to "let's explore how different cultures celebrate" energy.

Some ideas that work:
✨ Let students share their own traditions (voluntary, never forced)
🌍 Explore the science behind various cultural practices (light in different holidays, food preservation methods, winter solstice traditions across cultures)
🕯️ Focus on universal themes: light, gratitude, family, renewal
📚 Use inclusive language ("winter break" vs. assuming everyone celebrates the same thing)

The goal isn't to water everything down or avoid celebrating altogether. It's to make space for ALL your students to feel seen.

Because here's the thing: When students feel included, they engage more. When they see their traditions respected, they respect others' traditions too.
