Born in 1949 in a village in Karnataka, Kadri Gopalnath was initially trained in the nagaswaram , a traditional wind instrument, by his father. However, his destiny was sealed when he heard the saxophone. He convinced his reluctant father to buy him one, a princely sum of Rs. 800 at the time. What followed was decades of rigorous practice, often on the banks of the ancient pond at the Kadri Manjunatha temple (from which he took his prefix, "Kadri"). His dedication paid off. He became a pioneer, performing his first concert on All India Radio in 1978 and later receiving the Padma Shri award in 2014. He was affectionately titled the "Saxophone Chakravarthy" (Emperor of the Saxophone) and became the first Carnatic musician to be invited to perform at the prestigious BBC Promenade concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1994.
