Behind the door was a small room, no bigger than a pantry, lit by a single bare bulb. On a shelf: forty-seven glass jars, each labeled with a year of her life—1979, 1980, 1981, all the way to 2025. Inside each jar, something floated in pale amber liquid: a pressed flower, a bus ticket, a lock of hair, a broken watch. The jar marked 1995 contained a single tear-shaped crystal.
