Following the massive success of 1991's No More Tears , Ozzy famously announced his retirement, citing a misdiagnosis of multiple sclerosis and a desire to spend time with his family. The subsequent tour was literally named the "No More Tours" tour. However, the retirement didn’t stick. The album's creation was marked by a search for a new sound. Sessions began with producer Michael Wagener, but label executives pivoted after about seven songs, bringing in Michael Beinhorn, fresh off his work on Soundgarden's Superunknown . The original plan to feature guitar virtuoso Steve Vai also fell through, though he remains a co-writer on the song "My Little Man". This "what if" scenario of a Vai-fronted Ozzy band became part of the album's legend, even with Vai claiming a full album of material exists from those sessions.
