The plot follows Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), a 40-year-old sweet shop owner from Mumbai who embarks on a journey to Rameswaram to fulfill his late grandfather's final wish: to immerse his ashes in the holy waters. He boards the Chennai Express train, but his plans go hilariously awry when he helps the runaway bride Meenalochni "Meenamma" Azhagusundaram (Deepika Padukone). This act of kindness turns his journey into a chaotic adventure, as he must contend with Meenamma's formidable don father and her fearsome suitor, all while a romance blossoms amidst the North-South culture clash.
