Santos partnered with Dark Horse Comics to release the series in print, and it was the first collection, Polar: Came From the Cold , that served as the primary source material for the film. Santos himself was deeply involved in the adaptation process, helping with early script drafts and casting suggestions. While he advocated for a faithful adaptation in terms of character, he did not want a "panel-to-panel" recreation, instead hoping the film would "play and expand on the storytelling tools" of the comic medium. From the creator's perspective, Mads Mikkelsen was the perfect casting choice, an actor who "fully understood the role".
