The story follows Maria, an 11-year-old girl who is sent by her divorced mother to live with relatives, her cousin Lennart and his wife Maj-Britt, in a smaller town. Feeling displaced and lonely in her new environment, Maria soon befriends Jon, a large, dirty, and elderly man who is the town's outcast. The locals warn that Jon is a drunk, dangerous, and even a little crazy. However, when Jon is hit by a car, Maria is the only one who helps him. In doing so, she discovers that the seemingly gruff loner is in fact a talented painter, creating fantastic, colorful, and wonderful paintings in the solitude of his home.
