In the same anniversary year, a different, more expensive version emerged: ( Bitka na Kosovu ), directed by Zdravko Velimirović. This was a co-production between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union, intended as a grand cinematic spectacle.
The movie is set against the backdrop of a real historical event. On (according to the Julian calendar, or June 28 by the Gregorian calendar), a coalition of Serbian and Bosnian forces led by Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović faced the invading army of the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Murad I on the Kosovo field, about five kilometers northwest of modern-day Pristina.
The first half focuses on the diplomatic and internal struggles of Prince Lazar (played by Miloš Žutić) as he attempts to unite fractured feudal lords against the massive Ottoman army.
