We fished for an hour. Uncle Tom caught a sunfish the size of a wallet and kissed it before throwing it back. Dad caught nothing but a waterlogged branch. I caught a boot. An actual, honest-to-goodness boot. It was brown, crusted with mud, and had a hole in the toe.

It all started early in the morning when Dad woke me up with a big hug and a cheerful "Good morning, kiddo! Today's going to be a fantastic day!" I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and jumped out of bed, eager to see what the day had in store. Dad told me that Uncle Tom was coming over, and we were going to spend the day together, just the three of us.

Planned museum, but Uncle Tom suggests arcade. Dad is upset — they made a plan. Uncle Tom says “Be flexible.” They go to museum first (Dad happy), then arcade for 30 min (Uncle Tom happy). Narrator learns: you can do both.

We drove to a nearby park, where we spent the morning hiking and exploring the beautiful trails. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing their sweet melodies. It was the perfect day to be outdoors.

I grinned from ear to ear. "I am! We're going on an adventure, right, Dad?"
